This is what it felt like to be enveloped in the extraordinary experience of congregational worship at the intentional alternative Christian community that grew up around the Church of the Redeemer in Houston in the nineteen sixties through the nineteen eighties, and which eventually spread to sister communities in the US and the UK.

 

These compilations were arranged in such a way as to gesture toward the expansive experience of one song  blending seamlessly into the next...until we were truly, "lost in wonder, love and praise."

 

Many of the songs and arrangements were composed by the community members, in what was understood to be a gift of Holy Spirit and many have become a part the wider worldwide Anglican liturgical tradition. Some of the descants were spontaneous charismatic happenings.

 

The first compilation focuses on personal devotion to Jesus, and the felt presence of the Spirit, a shared, visceral, embodied experience, rather than mere belief.

The songs on the second track focus on how this counter-cultural extended family shared daily life together as living members of The Body of Christ. "....through the joy and through the pain....we celebrate!"
